It’s called ranked choice voting or RCV and, as the video explains, it’s as easy as 1-2-3.
If you believe in:
Vote YES on Measure D and bring RCV to Irvine’s mayoral and City Council elections.
Instead of selecting only one candidate, you can rank candidates in order of preference — first choice, second choice, third choice, and so on.
If a candidate receives over 50% of the votes, they win outright.
If no candidate wins a majority, there's an instant runoff and the last-place candidate is eliminated.
If your first-choice candidate is eliminated, your vote will transfer to your next-ranked candidate still in the race.
This elimination process repeats until one candidate secures a true majority.
Watch a simplified example move through multiple rounds as ballots transfer to voters' next-ranked continuing choices.
The count begins with each voter's highest-ranked continuing candidate.
When a candidate is eliminated, ballots can move to each voter's next-ranked continuing choice.
The example continues through additional rounds until a winner is determined.
